For me, this spring was been one of those times where work was taken over and getting away was tougher than I'd like. However, this is a new years resolution I am committed to sticking to - and I hope you are too. So although I haven't been able to jet off to Timbuktu, I'm still determined to explore places I haven't been; just places nearer to where I call home!
Tonnes of people think of theatre when they think of London. But it stretches so much further than West End. I wouldn't call myself a regular theatre go'er, but I have seen a fair few. (Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night is number one in my opinion.) Although the West End might be bright and sparkly, it can be hella lot more interesting going to the theatres a bit more under the radar. Southwark Playhouse is an awesome example of that. It's still super easy to get to, and feels a lot more authentic. The theatre is so much more intimate and you really feel immersed in the story. I went to see The Cardinal, which has finished now (soz.) But there's loads of other stuff coming up, go watch and be captivated by the real theatre scene in London. If it's good enough for Ian McKellen, it's good enough for you.
With cinema prices now being oh-so inflated, alternative cinemas are totally on the rise too. This is one totally worth the pricetag. Backyard Cinema, just round the corner from the Playhouse, is not just a screen. You've got tonnes of bars and pop up street food. Including Venezuelan, which is IN-SANELY good. And a more interactive cinematic experience. Once you're full up on your Venezuelan sandwich, and you French wine. All you'll want is a snuggly beanbag, cosy blanket, and a themed cinema. I don't want to tell you everything about this place as it's something you should experience yourself; without spoilers.
In typical London fashion, it's pricey to get in, but if you get tickets in advance is loads more reasonable. But be warned, you'll get sweaty. (For those that are freaking out right now, the balls get cleaned.)
What were you highlights for May? Did you explore at home or abroad?
