HOW TO... Cut the Queues, and the Stress, at Theme Parks

So you’ve made it to Orlando, the motherland for all adrenaline junkies, and now all that’s left to do is overdose on the magic laid out in front of you. My tips below should ensure you do just that. Theme parks get busy and overcrowded but just a few simple tricks, will ensure your dreamlike happiness remains totally intact!

  • Get there early and plan for the journey between the car park and the entrance. Magic Kingdom, for example, involves a monorail or boat trip from the car park just to get to the park entrance! Always arrive before the gates open.

  • Disney -Fast pass the best rides the night before. You can do this by simply logging in online and choosing a fast pass of the rides you most want to do. Then in the morning you can head over to your next best choices knowing you’ve the fast pass in the bag for your favourites later.

  • Universal Parks – fast passes at these are expensive so plan the rides you want to do and head straight to them when the park opens. Be prepared to queue later on in the day but take snacks and games to keep you entertained whilst you wait. The Harry Potter parks are split across Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure and you can ride the Hogwarts Express to get between the two. However, these parks get super busy and you'll be stuck in line after line by the afternoon. My tip? Forget the Hogwarts Express and designate a day to each park.

  • GET A MAP - Don’t just start on what you see first! Plan your route. I often start on the best ride at the back and work my way back towards the entrance. Done and dusted in a morning!

  • Take lunch with you – Theme Park food is overpriced and often a load of junk. Take a packed lunch and avoid yet another line of people waiting for their food.

  • Take the afternoon off! Don’t spend all day at a park until you’re exhausted and fed up. Stay the morning - and enjoy as much as you can - before heading back to the villa for a sunbathe in the afternoon. You’ll leave on a high this way and still have enough energy to return later for a show if you like.

  • Not feeling a Theme Park? Buy a Disney Combo ticket and see what else Disney has on offer. Disney Adventure Mini Golf, Disney Quest or Downtown Disney are just some of the alternatives to try out.

  • Only queue for anything 90 mins + once in a day. It’s not worth it! Stick to 60 mins or less or head to a different ride and come back to this one later. You want to love the experience not begrudge the time you spent sweating in a line!

  • Go to waterparks instead of the beach. Water Parks are the place to be in Orlando. They have wave pools and sand to mimic the beach alongside rides and lazy rivers to keep you, and the family, entertained all day! Koko beach is beautiful but watch out for the sharks.
